Cannot Join a Friend's Lobby

Quick Answer

Check that both players use the appropriate matching in-game server region. Distinguish lobby connection errors from voice-server failures and black loading screens; launch reports describe separate symptoms.

If you cannot join a friend's lobby in We Were Here Tomorrow, first check that both players use the same appropriate in-game server region. Then distinguish a lobby connection failure from a voice-server error or a loading screen after the lobby forms. These symptoms have appeared separately in launch-period reports, and they should not all be treated as the same fault.

Changing the server region helped individual players, but no single region is a verified fix for everyone. Crossplay is supported between PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S; a failed attempt alone does not mean your platform pairing is unsupported.

Point of failureUseful first check

Only a direct friend invitation failsTry the supported invitation route where your platform provides it

The support guidance recommends inviting a friend directly rather than creating a room as one troubleshooting attempt. That is useful where the friend-list invitation is available, but it does not establish the exact cross-platform invitation interface. Do not assume a platform friend-list button can invite a player on every other platform.

Match regions and retry one change at a time

  1. Have both players open the in-game settings and compare the selected region.
  2. Select a region appropriate to your locations, with the same setting on both systems.
  3. Reopen the game after the change and try connecting again.
  4. Note whether the outcome changes: no lobby, lobby followed by loading, or a voice error.

Players in one launch-day discussion reported success after changing from Auto to Europe, while another reported Turkey combined with both players restarting. These are individual workarounds rather than a reason for every pair to choose Europe or Turkey. The general official recommendation is to check the region and make sure the two players' settings agree.

Do not cycle through regions while also replacing audio devices and changing several network settings. Keep each retry comparable so a change in behavior is useful evidence.

Check the PC or console connection conditions

Use a stable internet connection, preferably wired where practical. Campus, library, and other public networks can impose restrictions on game or voice services. A browser loading successfully does not establish that every service required by the game is reachable.

On PC, check that Windows is updated and the system time and time zone are correct. Allow the game through antivirus or firewall rules if it has been blocked, and use the storefront's file-integrity check to repair missing or altered game files. The current Steam minimum specification lists Windows 11; an older troubleshooting reference to Windows 10 should not be read as a compatibility guarantee.

On console, check that the account permits online multiplayer and voice communication, and keep the system and controller updated. PS5 online play requires PlayStation Plus; Xbox online multiplayer requires an appropriate subscription. Those access requirements are separate from whether crossplay is supported.

Separate regional voice restrictions from lobby failure

Some regions restrict the voice services used by the game. The dedicated Tomorrow connection guidance describes continuing past a failed voice connection in affected cases and communicating through a third-party app. That does not guarantee that an unrelated lobby or game-server failure can be bypassed in the same way.

A VPN is also not a guaranteed solution: the support guidance warns that the games are not designed to ensure smooth VPN operation. Record whether a VPN is active before comparing results, rather than assuming it always improves the connection.

Keep a useful failure record

If the lobby still fails, record both platforms, both selected regions, which player hosts, the exact error message, and whether the lobby ever appears. Include whether the result changed after restarting following a region adjustment.

Avoid deleting save data to investigate an invitation problem. The evidence here does not establish that removing progress is necessary to join a friend. A precise description of the stage that fails is more useful than repeatedly starting a new journey or assuming the other player's copy is incompatible.
